A lifeguard development programme at Opunake Surf Life Saving Club is helping the community foster a new wave of junior surf life saving in the district. Opunake beach is an important recreation spot for the rural south Taranaki town and provides important sporting opportunities for locals. The club also provides vital surf life saving service during the summer months when holidaymakers swell the population.
Growing pains
With youth membership driving a surge in numbers the club was struggling to cope. Traditionally club members and parents did stirling work mentoring junior members but with the club quadrupling its membership to 120 in just three years there was a need for change. Resources were needed to build a high-quality junior surf programme and upskill volunteers. This was where the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa (TMAA) funding programme came in.

TMAA funded access to a qualified coach who could develop and deliver a programme for tamariki and rangatahi, that also upskilled club volunteers. The programme was designed to boost physical activity, confidence, and develop water skill safety. Juniors taking part would be encouraged to pursue the sport further if they were keen. They could enter junior competitions or eventually even go on to become qualified lifeguards.
“It’s a tradition to give back to the junior surf kids. It’s now my turn to be the person they look up to.” 17-year-old club lifeguard.
Successful beach sessions
The well-structured approach taken for the more than 70 young people involved in a session visited by Sport Taranaki was a highlight. Expert coaching delivered clear messaging of tasks and skill-development feedback. The paid coach led the session, supported by four club coaches and a large group of enthusiastic volunteers. It was clear it was an engaging, enjoyable session for everyone involved.
Parents were grateful for the qualified coach and professional delivery in their rural township.

Building an active future
The success of the program showed employing an expert, qualified sports coach with a brief to build capability has many benefits beyond the fun and activity of individual youth training sessions. Investing in club volunteers and their development has boosted the club and given them a model to develop keen youth in the sport of surf life-saving. The upskilling of coaches leads the way forward for a sustainable approach which would not have been possible without TMAA funding.
