REPLAY: Reconnecting sports gear to help keep our communities active

What is REPLAY? Play, Pass It On, Replay

Reconnecting new and pre-loved sports gear to keep our communities active.

Founded in 2017 by Manawatū mum of two, Denise McLean, REPLAY is a community-driven initiative that collects and redistributes quality sports gear. By giving equipment a second life, we help remove barriers to participation so more people can enjoy the benefits of being physically active while giving the environment a hand at the same time. It’s a win for the people and a win for the environment!

Since it started there have been nearly 50,000 items donated and reconnected by the REPLAY initiatives participating regions, including over 4200 items reconnected in Taranaki.  Ngā mihi nui to everyone who has donated – your support makes a huge difference.

How does it work in Taranaki?

Sport Taranaki administers it and it is supported in the region by Waste Management. The system is simple, with specially marked bins located across the region placed in easy to reach areas like sports hubs, schools or businesses. Once bins start to fill up with sports gear, we collect, clean and sort the gear then hand it back out to those that need it.

Why does REPLAY work so well?

Gear often sits unused - kids outgrow it, adults stop using it, and it can spend months or years tucked away in garages and sheds. For those wanting to be active, a lack of gear can be a real barrier - which is where REPLAY comes in. This community-led initiative passes on gear to the people who need it most - helping a child try a sport for the first time, giving an adult the chance to pick up a hobby again, or supporting a whānau to be active together. What was once gathering dust can now create real opportunities for movement, participation, and connection.

Why are Waste Management involved?

Waste Management Regional Manager – Taranaki/Manawatū Peter Grennell said the scheme was a natural one for the company to support in Taranaki with the donation of 10 bins. “We are keen to help the community recycle as much as possible in all different ways and we are happy to be part of such a great initiative.”

We are always looking for new locations for our roving bins that are available to be moved around the region for businesses, schools and organisations that wish to support the initiative.  If you're keen to host a REPLAY bin at your organisation for a select period of time or for an event, please contact Jasmin Carr, jasmin.carr@sporttaranaki.org.nz
