REPLAY
Collecting and redistributing quality sports gear
What is REPLAY?
REPLAY collects and redistributes quality sports gear. By giving equipment a second life, we help remove barriers to participation so more people can benefit from being physically active. People and the environment both benefit.
Since it started there have been over 4200 items reconnected in Taranaki and nearly 50,000 across all participating regions.
Ngā mihi nui to everyone who has donated – your support makes a huge difference. The scheme was recognised as a finalist in the Environmental Sustainability category of the New Zealand Sport and Recreation awards in 2026.
How does it work in Taranaki?
Sport Taranaki administers REPLAY, which is supported by Waste Management. The system is simple, with marked bins across Taranaki in accessible places like sports hubs, schools or businesses. As the bins fill we collect, clean and sort the gear then pass it on to those that need it.
Why does REPLAY work well?
Gear often sits unused - kids outgrow it, adults stop using it, and it can spend months or years tucked away in garages and sheds. For those wanting to be active, a lack of gear can be a real barrier - which is where REPLAY comes in. This community-led initiative passes on gear to the people who need it. It might be helping a child try a sport for the first time, giving an adult the chance to pick up a hobby again, or supporting a whānau to be active together. Gear that was once gathering dust can now create real opportunities for movement, participation, and connection.
Why are Waste Management involved?
Waste Management Regional Manager – Taranaki/Manawatū Peter Grennell said supporting the scheme in Taranaki with 10 bins made sense for the company.
“We are keen to help the community recycle as much as possible in all different ways and we are happy to be part of such a great initiative.”

How else can I support REPLAY?
