Taranaki Sports Awards 1988 - Overall Winner
Sheryl Burns (nee George) represented New Zealand in surf life saving, basketball and netball and was a cross code coach and administrator. After building an impressive record for New Plymouth's East End surf life saving club she took up basketball and was selected for New Zealand in 1985. She topped the national league’s scoring in 1985 and was named the NZ Basketball Institute's Most Valuable Player in 1986. After focusing on netball, she earned national youth honours and Silver Ferns selection.
