Taranaki Sports Awards 1982 - Overall Winner
Taranaki second-rower Graeme West became a Kiwis great during an 18-Test career which included one of New Zealand’s finest wins as captain. West established himself in the national side from 1979 and was named New Zealand’s Player of the Year in 1981. In 1983 as captain, he marked arguably his best Kiwis performance with a try in a 19-12 boilover win against Australia. This was New Zealand’s first victory over Australia in 12 years. He went on to have a successful playing and coaching career for Wigan, was named in Taranaki Rugby League’s team of the century. He was inducted as a New Zealand Rugby League Legend.
