Taranaki Sports Awards 2015 and 2022 - Overall Sportsperson of the Year, Senior Sportsman of the Year
Corey Peters continued his inspirational run on the slopes of the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Winter Games winning Gold in the Men’s Downhill Sitting event and a Silver in the Men’sSuper G Sitting event. The results were remarkable achievements, especially given Corey had not competed in a downhill event for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His own brush with the virus meant he missed the World Championships held just two months earlier. Corey, a long-time successful competitor in the sport, rightly described his gold medal performance as the “run of my life”. Previously he had won a silver medal in Giant Slalom at the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Winter Games and added a bronze medal in Downhill at the 2018 PyeongChang Games. Corey, a former Taranaki age group and development squad rugby representative, took up sit skiing in 2011, two years after a crushed spinal cord at a motocross event left him paralysed.
