As a double centurion he is the most capped player for Taranaki and equal highest capped provincial player in New Zealand. 

It is estimated the durable lock played about 600 matches in his career.

Club career

He played for Kaponga Rugby Club his whole career and coached the club after hanging up the boots.  He was a Life Member of the club. He was the first All Black the club produced.

Service

Ian served as President, Vice President and Patron of the Taranaki Rugby Football Union and was made a Life Member in 1981.​​​​​​​
