Ross Brown was an inspirational player and leader widely regarded as one of the best backs Taranaki has ever produced.

He was a central figure during two famous Taranaki Ranfurly Shield reigns from 1957-59 and 1963-65. He captained the side during the second run. From 1955-1962 Brown was a regular All Black selection, eventually chalking up 25 matches including 16 test caps.

Brown played 144 matches for Taranaki through his career and was a stalwart and Life Member of the New Plymouth Old Boys’ club. He also acted as a selector for Taranaki and was eventually made a life member of the Taranaki Rugby Football Union.

His name and legacy lives on in the annual Ross Brown tournament for U13 players that was launched in 1976.
