Tūparikino Active Community Hub
Construction Decision Coming Soon
New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) will soon be considering a plan to rephase the project so work can get underway in 2023. The proposed plan would see the construction of a hockey turf and community multi-use turf developed in phase 1, with the intention to develop the football turf and begin the Indoor Hub the following financial year.
This would be a positive step for the project as it will see it moving ahead and addressing an area of well-established need for the community with the resources available. It recognises the challenging funding and political environment and the need for the project to be phased to fit the times while the long-term vision for the Hub remains unchanged.
The first phase of this plan depends on the Council agreeing to bring funds forward to resource it when they meet at 9am on 27 September. It is important to note that this funding would be from the money already allocated to the project. It is not a request for new funding.
This plan also requires Taranaki Racing Inc and NPDC to agree to finalise a lease agreement. Positive discussions are underway to this end. Under this plan we will be working closely with all existing users in an ongoing way to minimise any disruption during construction.
Sport Taranaki and Councils has been working closely with equestrian groups across Taranaki (including New Plymouth Pony Club) over the past year to develop a Regional Equestrian Facilities Plan, the Plan is almost complete and provides an exciting direction and some opportunities for the sector to work more collaboratively to provide quality experiences to current and future equestrians; acknowledging that in the future the Racecourse site will no longer be available to NPPC.
The Indoor Hub (Stage Two) will be consulted on as part of the Council’s 10-year plan process, so the community is fully informed and consulted on the developed plans and their cost.
Foundation partners Ngāti Tūparikino, Ngāti Te Whiti, and Sport Taranaki together with NPDC and Sport New Zealand representatives have formed a Project Steering Group to help guide the project. Listening to the community there is still a real need for additional facilities to accommodate the growing participant numbers for both formal and informal sport and active recreation.
