Society is changing and traditional sports and sporting models are not enough to service our whole community.

Part of our work towards the vision of Taranaki: active for life is to help groups, clubs and organisations change their ways of working to fit the needs of people today.

Our work as a Regional Sports Trust is evolving to respond, supporting collaboration and connection in new ways throughout the sector, whether it be with the Tūparikino Active Community Hub, the creation of a Māori Lead role and a renewed emphasis on Active Recreation and Play.

As the national statistics show the challenge facing us is significant, with a recent national survey showing nearly one in three adults reported not participating in any active sport, exercise or recreation during the previous week.

The work of the Strength & Balance programmes featured in this newsletter show how success is not always about winning on a scoreboard – it is also about people living healthy, more connected and active lives.

Good Sports thoughts from sporting champions as winter sports kick off

Record-breaking Taranaki sprint champion Zoe Hobbs may have been lost to athletics if her parents had not helped her keep things fun as a kid.

Speaking to a cross-code gathering of parents and coaches at Inglewood’s TET Stadium, Hobbs said she when she started picking up athletics wins as a girl, she remembers a coach wanting her to drop other sports and focus on athletics.

“I’m very lucky that Dad had actually replied to that coach and basically said ‘no she can do whatever sport she wants for as long as she wants, she’s only 11 years old she should be having fun’ … I’m so grateful that he, and my Mum, allowed me to have that freedom in sport.”

Hobbs, looking fresh and relaxed after setting a new Oceania 100m record recently, said as a youngster she loved giving everything a go – getting stuck into netball, basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball along with her running and her parents supported her to try as many different sports as she liked.

“There was never ever that pressure from their end to continue with the sport if I didn’t like it or find value in it…that is what allowed me thrive in the sport.”

Staff Spotlight: Jasmin Carr

Jasmin Carr joined our team in early 2023 as Active Recreation Advisor, connecting with physical activity providers, schools, and organisations to support people on their journey to become more physically active. Her responsibilities centre around rangatahi to ensure they have access to quality, mana-enhancing, and co-designed active recreation experiences. Her mahi focuses on those at risk of missing out and addresses the multiple barriers that prevent youth from participating in physical activity. Jasmin recently won a Recreation Aotearoa Midlands Committee Scholarship to attend the national Green Pavlova conference in Wellington later this year.

Transition team on TRYathlon duty

It was a massive day in the transition at the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon New Zealand in New Plymouth recently.

Our team together with an awesome crew from Basketball Taranaki, Fonterra and New Plymouth Boys' High School had a flat out morning of fun helping out all the young legends as they got stuck into their race in beautiful conditions.

Laces were tied, bikes were found and there was plenty of high fiving and laughs for everyone. Well done to all the kids and their support crews that made this day happen. Ka rawe ki a koutou.
