What is Green Prescription?
A Green Prescription is a health professional's written advice to a patient to be physically active, as part of the patient's health management. Green Prescription provides support and motivation to increase your physical activity levels. Sport Taranaki’s Green Prescription team supports being active as an opportunity to enhance physical, mental and social wellbeing. This free service provides the guidance to get started - and get active, whether you are new or returning to physical activity.
How a Green Prescription can help?
Being physically active has many health benefits:
- Feel more confident, happy and relaxed
- Have more energy
- Improve cholesterol levels
- Improve blood sugar levels
- Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight
- Reduce stress or feelings of anxiety and depression
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve sleeping habits
- Keep your bones strong
- Cope better with asthma and breathing problems
- Increase flexibility, mobility and balance
- Improve pain management
- Reduce the risk of some types of cancer
- Reduce the risk of falling.
Who can access a Green prescription?
A health professional (e.g. GP or Practice Nurse) issues a Green Prescription provided the person is:
- 18 years or over and a New Zealand resident
- Inactive (participating in less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per day on most, if not all, days of the week)
- Medically stable and able to engage in low to moderate activity
- Happy to consent to sharing their relevant details with GRx team and being contacted about this.
How can I access a Green Prescription?
Ask your doctor or practice nurse about Green Prescription. Your doctor may refer you to the Green Prescription team if you both agree that your health would benefit from becoming more active. Alternatively you can refer yourself by contacting the Green Prescription team at Sport Taranaki by phoning 0800 ACTIVE (22 84 83) or filling out a SELF REFERRAL FORM FOR GREEN PRESCRIPTION
Your referral will then be sent to Sport Taranaki’s Green Prescription team. When your referral has been processed an INTRODUCTORY LETTER will be sent to you explaining the next steps involved with your Green Prescription. Please insure you check the consent and agreement terms on this letter.
Green Prescription Processes
Your Sport Taranaki’s Green Prescription advisor will contact you to discuss your current activity levels, your goals, and any barriers affecting your ability to increase your activity. Guidance will be provided around suitable activity options to create an activity plan suited to your individual needs. Please feel free to initiate contact with your Green Prescription advisor once you have received your introductory letter. Māori cultural support is available if required. If this is of interest to you, please discuss with your advisor in the first instance.
Face to Face Consultations
Sport Taranaki’s Green Prescription team can meet with you in person at Sport Taranaki. During this Face to Face consultation, your Green Prescription advisor will discuss your current activity levels, your goals, and any barriers affecting your ability to increase your activity. Guidance will be provided around suitable activity options to create an activity plan suited to your individual needs.
Ongoing Support (Reviews)
After your initial consultation, your Sport Taranaki Green Prescription advisor will stay in touch with you via phone, email or text message to help keep you motivated and track your progress with your activity plan. During these reviews, your advisor will discuss with you aspects such as any benefits noticed, your current activity level, and what the next step in your plan should be.
A prescription is active for an initial 3-4 month period. Prescriptions can be renewed for ongoing support. Your advisor will discuss this with you.
