The Moveable programme is a Sport Taranaki initiative that teaches fundamental movement skills to children with physical, intellectual and sensory impairments aged from 5 to 18 years.
The programme is held at New Plymouth Girls High School every Friday morning during the school terms and are divided into three sessions. Participants attend one session only depending on their age and impairment.
Each session has a specific skill focus with activities to help practice the learnt skill. In addition to learning physical motor skills the Moveable programme also aids in the development of social skills as the children and teens interact.
Each session consists of a warm up to music followed by a circuit, then cool down. Sessions last approximately 45 minutes and most children will require a one on one support person with them at each lesson.
Skills covered in the programme:
Gymnastics, aerobics, running, climbing, hanging, skipping, hopping, swinging, jumping, walking and circuits.
Ball skills including: catching games, passing, rolling and throwing.
If you know of a child that would like to be part of the programme please either talk to their school or contact our administration team.
Sport Taranaki acknowledges the Mellowpuff Charitable Trust and AICA NZ Limited for their support of the programme.
