Nga Pepe Wai
Nga Pepe Wai (Learn to Swim) is a water baby programme designed for parents, caregivers and their babies. Kohanga reo throughout the region attend this programme which is run all year at both North and South Taranaki swimming facilities.
The object of this programme is to provide fun activities while the participants learn water safety. While the aim behind this initiative is to encourage tamariki to be confident in the water, this programme also aims to upskill kaimahi to be able to deliver the classes.
Kura Visits
In the approach to the kura and kohanga reo, the Kaiwhakahaere encourages them to utilise Sport Taranaki's Active Schools and Active Movement programmes for maximum benefit to the Maori community.
At kura, through the Active Schools programme, specialists are provided to deliver sessions to teach tamariki skills in various sports including golf, netball, basketball and soccer. The intention is that tamariki gain the confidence to participate in the multitude of sports available to them today. It also aims to help them want to be more involved.
Marae-based Education
Team building exercises are held for school children on local marae. Traditional Maori activities such as taiaha, poi, haka, putting down a hangi, flax weaving, karakia and whakapapa are also part of the children's marae based experience.
Maori Sport Development
Sport Taranaki's Kaiwhakahaere provides pathways for local Maori athletes to regional and national Maori sporting events with a focus on increasing Maori participation in sport and physical recreation. By identifying codes where there are specific Aotearoa National Maori Tournaments, this programme encourages the development of Maori sports codes in Taranaki.
This initiative provides a pathway for Maori athletes to represent as Maori while being recognised for their skills and potential to progress in their sport.
