Workplace Health & Wellness Initiative
Imagine going to work to get fit and healthy? Local businesses are now being given this opportunity thanks to an initiative from Sport Taranaki to improve employee’s health and wellbeing.
Workplace Health and Wellness packages are being offered by Sport Taranaki after
increasing evidence supports the need for more companies to implement health and wellness strategies.
More than 64% of New Zealanders are either overweight or obese with a high percentage not operating at their full capacity due to their health. This is mostly due to poor lifestyle choices and can be improved through simple changes. Sport Taranaki’s Community Advisor, Kate Blanchard, who delivers the packages says by implementing a workplace health programme it can help with assisting these changes. She says “employees learn key messages about exercise, nutrition, weight loss, stress and shift-work.” Ms Blanchard also believes businesses will see increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, increased morale and loyalty, healthier employees and reduced risk of injury.
Local business, Olex New Zealand Limited, is the first company to pilot the initiative after a personalised package was developed for their staff to participate in. Olex Human Resources Manager John Tanswell says of their 150 employees over 50% have participated in the programme in some way. He says Olex offered free medical checks for all staff at the beginning of the programme to give them base line data on their wellbeing. “They were tested for a range of issues including blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, prostrate problems for men and iron deficiency for women. The combination of the medical checks and the programme topics has motivated many employees to change their lifestyles and many have gone on to set weight loss and / or fitness goals as a result.”
Mr Tanswell says Olex has benefited from the programme through a reduction in the amount of sick leave taken, greater teamwork, improved relationships through employees working together on their wellness goals and generally a more productive team due to increased fitness levels.
So Sport Taranaki is putting the challenge out to other businesses to try this new initiative because part of improving health is identifying risks early and making simple, but important lifestyle changes just as Olex has done. Sport Taranaki can assist with these changes so why not give it a go!
